In the timeless town of Macondo, seven generations of the Buendía family teeter between love, oblivion, and the inevitable past and destiny. It is the most expensive Netflix project in Latin America to date, with Colombian indigenous groups and communities building the props and sets for the series. 100 Years of Solitude is one of the greatest heights of Spanish-language literature. Its style is unparalleled and its scope is beyond imagination. Its characters are so well-developed that any screenwriter would have no problem writing them for the screen. But the seemingly insurmountable challenge in adapting the novel was its length. Compressing a hundred years of family and national history was an impossible task. Almost 60 years after its publication, the novel has found a cinematic screen on Netflix. Only streaming can do it justice, and the first two episodes are truly promising. Great cinematography, artistic direction, and respect for the characters. The voiceover is essential to allow García Márquez’s magnificent prose to emerge from time to time. The plot evolves with fluidity, richness and depth. I really like it and was a bit skeptical whether the magical world of GGM could be translated to the screen.
